Drawings as part of installation for Stone Soup. These are ink drawings depicting the ghostlike imprints of Cambrian and Precambrian creatures at their time of death, drawn from fossils. They continue to exist as residues inside rocks as well as within our bloodlines, as our ancestors. A closer view can be found here.
On the shelf: a piece of Precambrian forest (4500 million to 500 million years ago), uncovered by a storm on Curracloe Beach, Wexford, January 2014, a fossil from the Carboniferous era, from Hook Head, Wexford, (300-500 million years ago) a piece of coal from a 1930's shipwreck, washed up in same storm on Curracloe Beach, January 2014 (but also from the Carboniferous era originally), and a cow's vertebrae, found in Slaney estuary, Wexford, age unknown.
Stone Soup was a residency/exhibition/event curated by Basic Space (Dublin), on invitation by Ormston House (Limerick). The residency took place in Sailor's Home on O'Curry Street, Limerick, for the month of July 2014. The space was also scattered with lumps of local limestone. These stones and the house formed a 'fulcrum and a framework around and within which artworks have claimed a place' (Basic Space). During the month various artists took short residencies and contributed to the exhibition, on invitation. The residency involved open days for the public to visit, where the work of the artists could be seen 'adapting to the unique location, its imposed conditions, and the ever increasing number of surrounding works' (Basic Space).
